Geographic location

The Gualgüiltagua plateau is home to the Calderón population, it has a mild and dry climate conducive to convalescence from diseases that are acquired in humid places.

Name

Carapungo is the historical name of this Parish, a Quichua word that has several meanings: PUNGO: it is a door and KARANKI: which is decomposed into KARA + N + KI: place of the KARAS. Being KARAPUNGO “the door of the Karas”. In 1897 when General Eloy Alfaro led the Republic, he elevated KARAPUNGO to the category of Parish with the name of Calderón.

Historical facts

Before the arrival of the Incas, the inhabitants were possibly linked politically and ethnically to the Zambiza sector. This sector was known by the name of Carapungo "Leather Door" because the houses of the inhabitants of this place had their doors made and lined with animal leather.











Approximate time by bus: From La Marín to Calderón one hour. From Santa Prisca to Calderón 50 minutes.





Fruits and local products

Guabas, guavas, avocados, lemon, corn, beans, lima beans, peas.

Commerce.- in the parish center the population is dedicated to handicrafts, the most outstanding being wood carving, leather embossing, fabrics, and the traditional marzipan. It is an area in industrial and micro-business expansion.

Its Traditional Holidays

Huasipichay is the only festival of an aboriginal nature. The other festivals of the Immaculate, San José, Corpus Cristo and Christmas are all religious celebrations and take place in the town squares around the temples. There are traditional historical dates where parades with typical indigenous costumes are held especially in the center of Calderón, Las Comunas and Llano Grande.

Parochialization Festivities.-from July 28 to August 12 being its main events: proclamation of festivals, artistic, cultural and sporting events, election of the queen, international competition of gal-llos, marzipan fair, festival of typical foods, popular bulls, fellowship parade, popular dances.

Cultural manifestations

Marzipan handicrafts (all kinds of figures), wood carving, shamanism and dance groups.

Traditional Characters

In this area, there are hardly any remains of three human figures that stood out in the province: the water carrier, the woman from Carapungo and the Capariche.

The tradition represented by the Yumbos and the Dancers is still preserved.

Typical meals

Fried, cueritos, chicharrones, tostado, mote, caldo de 31. Uchucuta, traditional food that is prepared to be shared among relatives and neighbors in the local cemeteries commemorating November 2, the day of the dead.
