It was the political and administrative capital of the kingdom of Chimú. The original length was over 20 km2; It currently covers only 14 km2 and is considered the “largest mud city in the world”. On November 28, 1986, UNESCO declared Chan Chan a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The city is made up of 9 citadels or palaces that were designated under new names, made official in 1945. Each has similar formal characteristics, such as: monumental scale, very restricted access, complexity and elaboration of its architectural forms.



According to most researchers, the citadels were palaces with various functions: elite residences, administrative areas and, in the end, tombs of the Chimu kings.

Chan Chan would have been the capital of the Chimu kingdom, originally covering over 20 km2 from the Puerto de Huanchaco neighborhood to Cerro Campana. Archaeologists estimate that it housed over 100,000 people. Its structure includes squares, houses, warehouses, workshops, streets, walls and pyramidal temples. Its huge walls are profusely decorated with reliefs of geometric figures, zoomorphic stylizations and mythological beings. The tour of the archaeological site is complemented by a visit to the Site Museum.
