The Danube (in ancient Greek, Ister) is the second longest river in Europe (after the Volga), and is between 2 845 and 2 888 kilometers long, crossing the continent from west to east from its source in the Black Forest ( Germany) until it empties into the Black Sea in the Danube Delta (Romania).
The river passes through several capitals of Europe and constitutes the natural border of ten nations. The most important cities on its banks are Ulm, Ingolstadt, Regensburg, Linz, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Vukovar, Novi Sad, Belgrade, Ruse, Brăila and Galaţi.
The Danube is an important commercial road. Its watershed extends for 796 000 km ². Its average flow is 6 700 m³ / s.
Austria has 350 kilometers of the river in its territory, placing the country in sixth place among the bordering countries. Only Vorarlberg is part of the Rhine basin (North Sea) and a small part of northwestern Lower Austria. A few kilometers after the German city of Passau is the border between Germany and Austria, followed by the "Schlögen loop" where the Danube makes a 180 ° turn. Just over 70 kilometers after the border, the Danube crosses Linz, Austria's third largest city. The river passes through Mauthausen and Enns, where it lies the deepest point of the Danube in Austria, then reaches 90 km from Melk.
