The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is located in Lamego on St. Stephen's Hill, being one of the main pilgrimage churches in the country.

the sanctuary is now an integral part of the panorama of the city to which it is united by a scenographic staircase.

Popular devotion in the place dates back to a chapel, under the invocation of St. Stephen, erected in 1361.

In the sixteenth century, threatening to ruin, it was demolished (1568), beginning the construction of a new temple, on the initiative of the bishop of Lamego. In the new hermitage an image of the Virgin and Child was deposited.

Over time, devotion to St. Stephen diminished, replaced by devotion to the Virgin. The devotion of those who turned to her in search of relief from illness gave rise, in turn, to devotion to Our Lady of Remedies.

The present sanctuary was begun in 1750, and completed only in 1905.

The temple features baroque and rococo features on its façade. The façade is flanked by bell towers. In the construction was used the granite stone.

Inside, the main altar stands with the image of Our Lady of Remedies carved in wood, and three stained glass windows with the images of Our Lady of the Conception, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Annunciation.

The two side altars are dedicated to the virgin's parents (São Joaquim and Santa Ana). On one of the walls of the sanctuary are tiled panels with scenes of the Virgin's life.

Outside, stands the monumental stairway to the sanctuary, with 686 steps, developing into nine flights, ornamented with chapels, statues, fountains and obelisks. At one of these levels - the so-called "Patio of the Kings" - the images of eighteen Kings of Israel, belonging to the genealogical tree of the Virgin, stand out. At the base of the staircase are four figures allusive to the four seasons.

Its traditional festivities take place annually from September 6 to 8.
