Built in Vienna between 1889 and 1899, it serves as a gallery for avant-garde exhibitions. At the risk of Joseph Olbrich, disciple of Otto Wagner, the plant is a cube with a bronze tree topping off the cover. The architect considers the decoration an element apart, as is visible in the design of the dome. In fact, the insertion of unusual elements in the constructions is a characteristic common to the Viennese school. The forms of this building represent a return to the Egyptian elements, used in Napoleon's time. His ideas are not yet within the limits of the New Art, but it appears as a parody to the canons of classical art, then preconized. This idea is embodied in the façade itself with the inscription of the phrase "To each age its art, to art its freedom". This style will become a school, starting to direct Viennese Art Nouveau: a rational, geometric, mathematical architecture, in a constructive and geometric design that will later evolve into Art Deco.
