One of the architectural marvels of the 20th century is without a doubt the Opera House.



It emerged as a winning project in an ideas competition that was launched by the municipal government in 1957 to make a construction that would be an icon that would identify the city of Sydney worldwide.



233 projects from 32 different countries were presented, of which only 5 finalists were chosen. Joern Utzon, a Danish architect who had submitted his design, was not classified, however a member architect of the jury, Eero Saarinen, saw in the sketches presented by Utzon the future Opera House. The Danish's inspiration came during lunch, when he asked for an orange for dessert, peeled it and divided it into 8 parts.



Each piece of fruit had 2 flat faces and one-eighth spherical surface. He then he overlapped them in different ways, imagining a huge sailboat. Utzon was so satisfied with the effect that he did not worry too much about the details of the construction that appeared later as the work progressed, such as the wind from the bay that caused too many problems, so it was necessary to calculate a structure that would resist these domes since there was no other building built with similar characteristics.













This majestic building is located in the southeast of the country, in the city of Sydney, capital of the Australian state of New South Wales, more precisely in the city's port.

In the building plays, ballet, opera or musical productions are performed. It is home to Opera Australia, Sydney Theater Company and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Declared a World Heritage Site in 2007.
