Two districts of the nineteenth century to the east of the New Town that merit being visited: for a long time independent cities of Prague, Vinohrady lives with Žižkov, inhabited by the popular classes and currently, conquered by bohemian artists and students.
The construction of the neighborhood of Vinohrady began in the mid-nineteenth century on vineyards (planted from the fourteenth century by Charles IV) from which he inherited his name. Some street names resemble names of rural areas. The middle class and the bourgeoisie settled in buildings with façades decorated in the style of urban palaces (historicist and eclectic style, with some secession touches after 1900), or in large villages surrounded by gardens. Independent city until 1920, Vinohrady was the second most important city of the Kingdom of Bohemia after Prague at the beginning of the century. Symbol of its prestige: the large public buildings built around the central square Náměstí Míru: the church Santa Ludmila (built by the architect of the cathedral Josef Mocker), the neo-baroque theater Na Vinohradech and the National House.
Žižkov is a little more recent, due to its slightly more recent, due to its rugged terrain and little buildable, which gives it a more picturesque and irregular appearance. Its small apartments are intended for a more modest class. However, their well-decorated facades copy the style of Vinohrady's houses, hiding from the social differences of the neighborhood. The architect of the cathedral Josef Mocker is also present in the construction of the church of Saint Prokope, in an exiguous and irregular part. Condemned to demolition by the communists in the 80's to be replaced by blocks of buildings, the neighborhood owes its conservation to the Velvet Revolution: since then it is the place of students and artists of Prague, who appreciate the picturesque, lively life and its closeness with the center of the city.
