Established the Mercedarian Order, the construction of this important sample of colonial architecture dates from the year 1536. It is said that its founder, Fray Miguel de Orenes, arrived in Peru at the age of 110, and assisted the conqueror Francisco Pizarro in his agony.
The first church was made of wood, and its construction with noble materials began in the first decade of the seventeenth century. Despite the disastrous modifications to which they have been subjected, there is still an elegant facade and interiors.
The church has a profusely carved granite façade dating from 1687. The ceiling has been decorated with plaster sgraffito, and an exceptional series of tiny baroque and gilded altarpieces, such as that of San Serapio and that of the Virgen de la Antigua.
Inside the temple, the main altar of neoclassical style stands out. Above it stands an image of the Mercedarian Virgin, who was appointed patron of the Army by the Constituent Assembly in 1823.
The dressing room of the Virgin is crowned by a beautiful dome that, together with the one in the Sacristy, are original in style.
The temple also has the altar of the Virgin of Lourdes. It has three bodies: the lower one is made up of profusely decorated Ionic columns; the second contains the same number of niches as the first with their respective effigies; and the third has a single niche with corbels (boards) on the sides.
In addition, you can see the choir stalls over the main entrance, the rococo-style altarpieces such as that of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, sculptures such as the Cristo del Auxilio (17th century) by Martínez Montañez, and some reliefs by Martín Alonso de Mesa .

The Convent preserves two beautiful cloisters built with Panama stone. Both show details of undoubted Mudejar influence.
The two upper cloisters are linked by a magnificent and elegant staircase. It has three branches and is sheltered by a rectangular vestibule that is crowned with a dome on pendentives. The sacristy of the convent treasures the so-called Cruz de la Conquista, brought by the first Mercedarians who arrived in Peru.
In its origins the Convent of La Merced was the limit of the city. The Spanish chronicler Bernabé Cobo writes that when the neighbors went out for a walk through the city "from him, as from the end of the town, they turned the rein to the horse for the town."
La Merced has one of the best collections of colonial canvases and carvings in Lima.
