Presentation
It is a historical and tourist region of central Anatolia in Turkey.
The most distinctive features of the region are its unique geological formations, the result of volcanic phenomena and erosion, and its rich historical and cultural heritage, including underground cities and numerous rock-hewn dwellings and churches, many of them with admirable frescoes. In 1985, Goreme National Park, one of the region's most famous areas, with 9,576 ha, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The unique landscape of the region is the result of the action of natural forces over millions of years.
Tourist points
When it comes to Cappadocia, the first thing that happens is the famous balloon rides. But there are many other interesting attractions to visit, such as cave churches, underground cities, valleys and the exotic fairy chimneys. See in this post some of the main tourist attractions of the region.
Goreme Open-Air Museum is one of Cappadocia's main tourist attractions and is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It has a large collection of cave churches built by Christians between the 10th and 13th centuries.
Kaymakli Underground City, Derinkuyu Underground City, among others, were built primarily to protect Christians from invading enemies. There is a very clear room division, with bedrooms, kitchens, food storage, churches, secret doors, connecting tunnels and deep wells that served as a ventilation system. Even animals were taken into the underground cities!
The Valley of the Birds is named after several bird houses that have been carved into the caves. In the valley of the birds you can find a tree full of turkish eyes. There are similar trees in other tourist locations.
Uçhisar is a village near the valley of birds and the town of Goreme, which has a higher mountain called Castleo de Uçhisar, where you can have a beautiful panoramic view of the region.
The Three Fine, is a lookout where are located the three most famous fairy chimneys of Cappadocia.
Çavusin Village is next to Goreme which has Turkey's only mosque built in a cave. It is one of the oldest buildings in the region, built around the 5th century.
Devrent Valley is an area whose relief resembles the surface of the moon and also contains several exotic animal-shaped rocks such as camel, shark, dolphin, dog and seals.
In the Valley of the Monks - Pasabagi you can see several examples of different fairy chimneys with various types of "hat", including the finest in the region, which looks like they will collapse with the first strong wind that blows.
The Valley of Love is named for this, believe me, because of the suggestive shape of fairy chimneys, which refer to the male sexual organ.
The Rosa and Vermelho Valley are the largest valleys in the region. They have this name because of the coloration of the rocks.
The small and quiet town of Goreme is a symbol of Cappadocia.

Other Cappadocia attractions:
- Avanos: A small town known for its pottery and tapestry.
- Urgup: a town next to Goreme which has a winery where you can taste Cappadocia wines;
- Kehslik Monastery;
- Ihlara Valley: an extensive gorge for hiking;
Horseback riding: Before balloon rides came, horses were one of Cappadocia's most important attractions;
- Turkish Night: Dinner with typical Turkish dance show, including wedding ceremony, belly dancing, including a Whirling Dervishes show.
- Turkish Bath: In the center of Goreme there is a house where you can visit the famous Turkish bath (hamam).
