Hong Kong
Hong Kong is one of the two special administrative regions (SAR) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the other being Macau. A city-state located on the south coast of China and delimited by the Pearl River Delta and the South China Sea, it is known for its skyline filled with skyscrapers and its deep natural harbor. With an area of 1,104 km², Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. The city's population is made up of 95% ethnic Chinese and 5% of other ethnic groups. Most Chinese city Han originates mainly from the cities of Guangzhou and Taishan in the neighboring province of Guangdong.
Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after the First Opium War (1839-1842). Originally confined to Hong Kong Island, the colony's borders were extended in stages to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and then to the New Territories in 1898. It was occupied by the Empire of Japan during the Pacific War after which British control was resumed until 1997, when China reassumed the city's sovereignty. The colonial era had a major influence on Hong Kong's current culture, often described as the place where the East meets the West, and its educational system, which used to follow the UK system until reforms were implemented in 2009.
