From Alto do Trevim, at 1202 meters, the rounded ridges of shale mountains and the dramatic cut that form large rocks between them, appear to us as a majestic landscape.
But discovering the Serra is a great adventure: on the wet slopes there are traces of the evergreen forest and holly or laurel surprises us on the way. The oaks and those majestic trees that are chestnut trees allow you to guess the flight of jays.
Cuckoos are announced in the spring and on the stacked stone walls that line the paths, a wren can hide. Slate villages surprise with wisdom! Everything was used: the door and window lintels are brown, the slate slabs are on the eaves, on the tiles and on the windowsills. Chestnuts came from chestnuts and chestnut soup was still famous today. The goat was eaten when it was old and was soaked in red wine, softened and flavored with chanfana. From the small gardens, fresh vegetables came out which, mixed with bread and oil, formed delicious crumbs. Today, heather and many bees produce excellent honey.
Located in the extreme southwest of the Central Mountain Range, the Serra da Lousã encompasses the municipalities of Lousã, Castanheira de Pêra, Góis, Miranda do Corvo and Figueiró dos Vinhos.
Areas of special interest:
- Cantão das Hortas, where exotic and natural plant species are confused on the dark and cool slopes marked by water courses. They are birches, American oaks and chestnut trees, which are mixed with pseudotsugas, cedars and scots pines.
- Mata do Sobral where the microclimatic conditions allowed a remarkable adaptation of a species with a marked Mediterranean influence.
- Ribeira de S. João Valley that runs along the ´´Caminho da Levada´´ where stacked schist walls draw a narrow path dominated by chestnut trees that give a particular color to the landscape.
