In total there are 94 species of birds that reside temporarily or permanently in this important aquatic ecosystem of the Peruvian coast.



The waters that form the swamps come from the filtrations of the Mala river basin and the irrigation channels of San Andrés. In them life sprouts with unusual beauty.



Hundreds of years ago, the area was used by the pre-Columbian settlers of the Chilca ravine to obtain their livelihood. In the small lagoons that today shelter birds and totorales, they fished when the tide went out.





On one side of the calm waters of the Puerto Viejo beach, 74 kilometers south of Lima, there is a set of lagoons that have been formed in the Puerto Viejo swamps, a small Natural Reserve where it is possible to admire gray herons , parihuanas, divers or ospreys.



Over time the place has transformed its morphology. Wetlands today comprise diverse ecological zones that are the habitat of a characteristic flora and fauna.



The wetlands of Puerto Viejo, together with the Pantanos de Villa, the Paracas Reserve, the Albuferas de Huacho, the Mangroves of Tumbes, are part of the biological corridor of the South Pacific Coast of the continent.
